Why it fishes

Channel Islands Harbor sits right across from Anacapa and Santa Cruz — for a lot of anglers, the shortest island run on the coast. That easy access to island kelp and structure is the port’s whole identity: calico, white seabass and yellows without a marathon.

The area is also famous for its squid, which draw white seabass and other predators onto the grounds. Add the Ventura flats for halibut and you’ve got a productive, well-rounded home port at the north end of the Bight.

What you’ll chase

Leaving Channel Islands Harbor, on any given week you could tangle with:

The grounds within range

  • Anacapa Island

A short island run — kelp, reef and boilers for calico, white seabass and yellowtail.

  • Santa Cruz Island

The big island next door — miles of kelp and structure, and rockfish on the hard bottom when open.

  • The squid grounds

Local grounds where spawning squid pull white seabass and other predators in.

  • Ventura Flats

Sand off the harbour — halibut across the bottom and sand bass in the warm months.

When it’s good

Channel Islands shines in spring and summer — white seabass fire up on the squid in spring, calico and halibut fish through the warm months, and the islands stay productive into fall. Rockfish come from the island hard bottom when the season is open. Winter slows down.

Warmer means better. A rough shape of the year, not a promise — the ocean writes its own calendar, which is exactly why you check the daily read.

🌊 Heads up: the island runs cross open water — check wind and swell, which build fast near the north end of the Bight. White seabass and rockfish carry CDFW size, bag and season rules that change year to year.
