Sculpin fishing in Southern California
Venomous spines, excellent on the plate, and absolutely worth learning to handle properly before you catch one.
sculpin regulations
Listed by CDFW as California scorpionfish. The spines are venomous, so handling it safely matters more than the limit does.

Meet the sculpin
In California everyone calls it sculpin; the book name is California scorpionfish, and the book name is the one that matters, because it is a scorpionfish in the full sense. Mottled red-brown, covered in fleshy tabs, and built to sit on a rock looking exactly like the rock.
The spines are the point
The dorsal, anal and pelvic spines carry venom, and a sting hurts badly for hours. Treat every sculpin as loaded: use pliers, never grab one by the body, and watch where you put it down. The standard field treatment for a sting is hot water, as hot as you can stand, which breaks the venom down, and a doctor if it is bad.
Where sculpin hang out
Rock, wrecks, artificial reef and hard bottom, often in 50 to 200 feet. They move shallower in spring and gather to spawn, which is part of why their season is managed with the rest of the groundfish complex. Anywhere you catch rockfish, you will eventually catch these.
How to catch sculpin
Squid or cut bait right on the bottom. They are not fast and they are not picky. The real skill is everything after the hookset: bring it aboard under control, unhook it with a tool, and handle the fillets as you would any other fish once the spines are off.
Where to catch sculpin
The grounds that hold sculpin within reach of each home port, south to north. Follow a port through for its season, the rest of the water it reaches, and the rules that apply there.

The venom is a protein, which is why hot water works: heat denatures it. The same first aid applies to stingrays, which is worth knowing if you ever shuffle your feet in the wrong patch of sand.
Heading out for something we do grade?
This is a profile, not a scored species. Fish or Pass grades seven fish across the Bight every day, so if you are going anyway, see what the water is doing for those.
