California barracuda regulations

MINIMUM SIZE

Short barracuda are common and the twenty-eight inch minimum is the part that catches people out.

14 CCR 27.60(a), 28.25, as read on October 9, 2026. Limits, seasons and marine protected area boundaries change, so the CDFW ocean sport fishing regulations are the authority, not this page. Check them before you keep anything.

Meet the barracuda

These are not the heavyweight tropical great barracuda; the California species is slimmer, smaller and far more common, and it runs in schools near the surface. Locals call a big one a β€œlog.” They are built like a chrome pipe with a hinged jaw on the front, and they are quick.

Where California barracuda hang out

Up near the surface over the kelp line, along the beaches, around the islands and anywhere bait is pushed up. They follow warm water north through the season, so a mild year puts them in the Santa Barbara Channel and a cold one keeps them south.

How big California barracuda get

Three to six pounds is normal and they are long for their weight, so a fish that looks huge in the water weighs less than you think. There is a legal minimum length, and the fillets are better from a bigger fish, so check the current CDFW rules and let the small ones grow.

How to catch California barracuda

They will hit almost anything moving fast: surface iron, a chrome spoon, a fly-lined sardine. The problem is not getting bit, it is staying connected, because those teeth go through mono. A short length of heavier fluorocarbon fixes most of it without killing the bite.

Where to catch California barracuda

The grounds that hold California barracuda within reach of each home port, south to north. Follow a port through for its season, the rest of the water it reaches, and the rules that apply there.

Seasons, depth limits, size and bag limits and marine protected area boundaries are set by CDFW and change from year to year. Check the current rules for the ground you are running to before you keep anything.

🐟 FUN FACT

Barracuda are the fish most often blamed for a cut-off that was really a bad knot. They do bite leaders through, but the clean, slightly angled cut they leave is distinctive once you have seen a few.

Heading out for something we do grade?

This is a profile, not a scored species. Fish or Pass grades seven fish across the Bight every day, so if you are going anyway, see what the water is doing for those.
